Liar Game FAQ: Players, Ties, Guessing and Devices
Here are the questions that come up most often during play. If yours is not answered here, send it to the address on the Contact page.
Players and setup
How many people can play?
A room holds 3 to 12 players. The most fun range is usually 4 to 8.
How many players do I need for two liars?
At least 5. With 4 or fewer players the game always uses one liar.
Do I need to sign up or log in?
No. You only enter a nickname when you join a room. Nicknames can be up to 10 characters, and two people in the same room cannot use the same one.
Does it work on iPhone or a computer?
Yes. On iPhone and on PC you play right in the web browser, nothing to install. If you open an invite link in the browser on an Android phone, you will see a screen to install the Android app from Google Play, and the first time you open it after installing, it takes you straight into that room.
We only have one phone. Can we still play?
Yes. Tap "Pass one phone" on the home screen and hand the phone around so each person can see their card. After the page loads, everything runs on that phone without going through a server. The full walkthrough is in Rule variants.
Rules and judging
What happens if the vote is a tie?
Only the players tied for the most votes go to a revote, once. If the revote is also tied, the liar wins.
Can I vote for myself?
No. Your own name cannot be selected on the voting screen.
What if someone has not voted yet?
The host can tap "End vote" to decide the result with the votes received so far. If everyone votes, the result is revealed automatically.
How exact does the liar's guess have to be?
Spaces, upper or lower case, punctuation and accents are ignored. A synonym or a different word, however, is wrong, so typing the exact word is the safe bet.
With two liars, who gets to guess?
Only the liar who was accused in the vote. If they get it right, both liars win and both get a point.
In Fool liar mode, when does the liar find out?
When they are accused and revealed as the liar, or when the result is shown. Until then their card looks just like a citizen's.
Is there a timer?
No. Your group sets its own pace. If a vote drags on, the host can use "End vote".
Do we talk inside the game?
No, the talking happens face to face or on your own video or voice call. The game handles the roles, the speaking order, the vote and the score, and leaves the conversation to you.
Can we add our own words?
Not at the moment: every word comes from the built in lists. If there is a word you would love to see, suggest it through the Contact page with the language and topic.
Rooms and data
Can a friend join halfway through?
Yes. Anyone who joins while a round is in progress plays from the next round. A room holds up to 12 players.
What if the host leaves?
The host can only leave from the lobby or the result screen. When they do, the next player in the room becomes the host.
Where do the words come from?
From lists we picked and wrote by hand for each language. There are 21 topics with more than 40 words each. You can see examples in Topics and words.
How long is my data kept?
A room expires once it has gone unused for 3 hours since the last activity, and is deleted within a day together with nicknames, roles and scores. The details are in the Privacy policy.
Which languages are available?
9 languages: Korean, English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. The words in a room follow the language the host's screen was set to when the room was created.
